In the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque attacks in 2019, her response resonated around the world. Wearing a hijab as a sign of solidarity with the Muslim community, Ardern’s pledge that “they are us” was more than just rhetoric - it was a reflection of a leadership style that prioritised empathy and inclusion. In an era where divisive leaders were becoming the global norm, Ardern was seen as a refreshing alternative: a leader who could unite people in shared grief and forge a national sense of togetherness in the face of tragedy.

For many New Zealanders, this was only the beginning of Ardern’s inspirational leadership. Her handling of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic attracted international praise. “Go hard, go early,” she proclaimed, as New Zealand implemented some of the strictest lockdown and border measures in the world. These actions, paired with Ardern’s regular, calm communication with the public, helped New Zealand keep its COVID-19 death toll exceptionally low in the early days of the pandemic. In contrast to the chaotic responses seen in many other countries, New Zealand stood as a model of what swift, decisive action could achieve under Ardern’s leadership.

On the global stage, Ardern became a symbol of a new kind of progressive leadership - one that balanced strength with empathy, decisiveness with compassion. Her speeches at international forums like the United Nations focused not only on her domestic policies but also on wider global challenges, including climate change and human rights. Ardern became a figurehead for a progressive movement that saw leadership as not just about power, but about humanity.

At home, her government sought to deliver on the progressive promises that had brought her to power in 2017. Mental health, child poverty, housing and climate change were areas where Ardern hoped to make lasting changes. Initiatives like the 2019 Wellbeing Budget, which shifted the focus away from traditional economic indicators like GDP and towards broader measures of social well-being, reflected her attempt to rethink how governments could serve their people. The expansion of free mental health services, increased funding for schools, KiwiBuild and policies aimed at reducing child poverty were cornerstones of this new, people-centered approach to governance.

“The Damaging Tyrant”

However, Ardern’s leadership, praised by many, was also deeply polarising, especially among those who saw her policies as damaging or authoritarian. Nowhere was this division more evident than in the later stages of her COVID-19 response. While the initial lockdowns were broadly accepted, the extension of these measures, along with vaccine mandates and strict border controls, led to growing frustration and dissent.

For many, Ardern’s policies came to symbolise an overreach of government power. Families were separated for extended periods, businesses were shuttered, people were forced to leave their jobs and everyday life became dominated by government-imposed restrictions. For many, what began as a legitimate health response evolved into a heavy-handed exercise in control, infringing on individual freedoms and contributing to increasing economic pain and future national debt burden.

One of the most significant criticisms of Ardern’s leadership centers around the state of New Zealand’s economy during and after her tenure. Housing and rent prices continued to soar under her government, exacerbating a crisis that made homeownership increasingly unattainable for many New Zealanders - ironically in particular the younger generations and poorer New Zealanders often supporting her.

Despite promises of reform and a commitment to building more affordable housing, Ardern’s policies failed to make significant inroads into addressing the housing crisis. Indeed, with the borders closed and immigration effectively paused, it was a unique opportunity lost to make a genuine impact on New Zealand’s housing stock deficit.

Many middle-class and lower-income New Zealanders felt the increasing pressure of rising living costs, compounded by wage stagnation. Critics argue that her government’s focus on progressive social policies came at the expense of practical, ‘bread-and-butter’ issues like cost of living, housing affordability, crime and economic growth.

Mental health, too, became a contentious area of Ardern’s legacy. Her 2017 campaign promised a greater focus on mental health, and while her government did allocate significant resources towards this issue, results were mixed. The pressures of prolonged lockdowns, economic uncertainty, and social isolation during the pandemic saw New Zealand’s mental health crisis worsen, with rising rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Many critics argued that while Ardern talked extensively about mental health, the outcomes failed to match the promises.

Moreover, her focus on progressive social policies often alienated large segments of the electorate. From gender identity legislation to bold climate action, Ardern’s government embraced policies that resonated strongly with progressive voters but alienated many others. For conservative and centrist New Zealanders, these policies felt like an imposition of ideology, furthering a divide between urban progressives and voters more interested in results than rhetoric. In their view, Ardern’s government was out of touch with the concerns of everyday New Zealanders, focused instead on issues that did not reflect the priorities of the broader population.

Ardern’s clarion call to “be kind”, still regularly repeated but selectively applied by many of her supporters, created an increasingly untenable contradiction for her detractors as Labour’s policies, especially in regard to COVID-19 and cost of living, increasingly seemed anything but.

Then came her resignation. In early 2023, Ardern announced that she no longer had "enough in the tank" to continue as Prime Minister, a move that caught many by surprise. Her decision was praised by supporters as an act of self-awareness and humility, a recognition that political leaders, too, are human. But to her critics, it was seen as an abdication of responsibility.

At a time when New Zealand faced numerous challenges - rising inflation, continued housing shortages, and a fraying social fabric - Ardern’s resignation was viewed by many as abandoning ship. The fact that she soon accepted prestigious international opportunities, including a fellowship at Harvard, only added to the perception that she had chosen personal advancement over her country’s needs.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Understanding the Dichotomy

So, why does Ardern inspire such extreme reactions? Her supporters and critics both have legitimate reasons for their strong feelings. On the one hand, Ardern’s leadership style, centered on empathy and inclusion, resonated powerfully in moments of crisis. Her handling of the Christchurch mosque shootings and her early COVID-19 response showcased a leader who could unite a nation and protect its people. Her progressive policies on mental health, child poverty, and climate change reflected a vision for a more compassionate, sustainable future.

But on the other hand, the cracks in her leadership became more apparent over time. Ardern’s government failed to address the housing crisis, rising inequality, child poverty, crime, and the growing division and discontent among those who felt left behind by her policies and failure to convert promise into measurable change. The pandemic, which had initially been a source of strength for her leadership, became a millstone as the costs and impacts of extended lockdowns and mandates mounted. And her resignation, while understandable on a personal level, felt to many like an abandonment of the challenges she had helped create.

The truth is, Ardern’s legacy is both highly admirable and deeply flawed. Her supporters are right to praise her compassion, communication skills, and commitment to progressive values. But her critics are equally justified in pointing out the gaps between her rhetoric and results, particularly in terms of policy and public service delivery, economic management and handling social division. Both views reflect aspects of her leadership and legacy that are real and meaningful, which is why they continue to provoke such strong responses.

Legacy and Future Reflection

Jacinda Ardern’s legacy will be debated for years to come, both in New Zealand and internationally. She remains a global figure, a symbol of progressive leadership admired by many around the world. Her emphasis on empathy and compassion in governance, particularly in moments of crisis, is likely to be remembered as a positive contribution to and influence on political discourse.

However, the unresolved issues of her tenure - particularly around housing, economic inequality, social division, and the fallout from her pandemic policies will continue to shape New Zealand’s political landscape long after her departure. Ardern’s legacy will be defined not only by her own actions but by how future governments address the challenges she left behind. Her international career, while personally successful, will also serve as a reminder to her critics that she left New Zealand at a time of significant need.

Understanding Ardern’s legacy requires moving beyond simplistic narratives and acknowledging the complexity of her time in office. Both her admirers and her detractors can find ample evidence to support their views, but neither can claim a monopoly on the truth.

Ultimately, Jacinda Ardern’s legacy underscores the immense challenge of leading a nation in an age of deepening division and amid the evolution of influence from legacy media to social media. She governed a country where historical grievances remain unresolved, a unifying vision for the future is elusive, and the machinery of governance - both the political system and an underperforming public service, struggles to rise to the moment. Her tenure reflects the complexities of leadership in a nation grappling with its past, uncertain of its future, and constrained by the imperfections of its institutions and divisions of it’s people.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of Jacinda Ardern’s legacy - regardless of whether you admire or despise her - is the profound opportunity it offers New Zealand to reflect and learn. Yet, as a nation, we seem dangerously close to squandering this opportunity. Political parties, and their loyal supporters, appear less interested in addressing the lessons of her tenure than in perpetuating its shortcomings. The centre-right seems fixated on outcomes, often neglecting the empathy needed to carry people with them. The centre-left remains committed to compassion but risks losing sight of the economic discipline required to turn ideals into enduring realities.

Both approaches are incomplete and flawed, highlighting the need for something New Zealand has not yet seen: a leadership vision that unites compassion and capability, a strategic direction that transcends division, and a willingness to embrace complexity for the greater good. The question is no longer just about Jacinda Ardern’s legacy - it’s about who among us has the courage and wisdom to rise to the occasion. Who can move beyond partisan squabbles to guide this nation toward a unified, inclusive future that fully realises our extraordinary potential?

Thanks for reading Optimocracy! PFLP?

PFLP Solidarity Aotearoa describes the PFLP as a secular left-wing liberation movement who have been actively resisting Israeli occupation for over fifty years.

The United States National Counterterrorism Center takes a slightly more critical view, describing the PFLP as a terrorist group combining Arab nationalism with Marxist-Leninist ideology who see the destruction of Israel as integral to the struggle to remove Western capitalism from the Middle East, and ultimately seek to establish a Communist Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

As we have seen throughout history (and the Star Wars saga) - one person’s freedom fighter is another persons terrorist.

Founded in 1967, the PFLP has engaged in numerous operations over the years, including airplane hijackings, bombings, and assassinations.
It’s understood that while their ‘operational tempo’ has reduced in the last five years, they remain active and maintain relationships with other terrorist organisations, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
The PFLP’s view, unsurprisingly shared by PFLP Solidarity Aotearoa, is the right of the Palestinian people to resist occupation by the Israeli state.

While it’s the fashion to argue sides and signal virtue on the unimaginable situation in Gaza, I’m a fan of diplomacy and reason as first principles. What HAMAS did on October 7 2023 and since is barbaric. Israel’s response has been horrific. While they are free to take a stance on social issues, they aren’t as free when it comes to New Zealand’s Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Amendment Act 2017 or international law.

Kiwibank’s Responsible Business Banking policy outlines the entities they wont provide banking services to. Interestingly, while Kiwibank are commendably taking a stand against palm oil, porn, and predatory lending, they notably don’t rule out terrorist entities here. I’m not a banking policy expert, but this strikes me as somewhat of an oversight.

When one digs further into ‘Kiwibank’s Code’ however, they are more explicit:

“Kiwibank complies with economic and trade sanctions imposed by New Zealand and other jurisdictions and international bodies. These sanctions prohibit us from doing business with certain countries, organisations and individuals who have been identified as having links to terrorism or other criminal activity.”

This to me seems more cut and dry. Yet the situation stands which begs the question, why? Financial institutions play a critical role in preventing the flow of funds to terrorist organisations. Aside from being contrary to their own code, by allowing its services to be used for such purposes (regardless of it’s potential views on the Gaza conflict), Kiwibank are jeopardising their reputation and potentially putting themself in an ethical, legal and policy conflict of their own.

So, where to from here?

Regardless of where one sits on the Gaza conflict, whilst the PFLP is designated as a terrorist organisation by New Zealand’s allies, Kiwibank should do two things.

Firstly it should take immediate and decisive action to sever any ties with fundraising efforts for the PFLP, and any other terrorist group. As a responsible financial institution, and in line with it’s own code, it has a duty to ensure its services are not used to support terrorism whether it agrees with the designation or not.

Secondly, it should update it’s Responsible Business Banking policy to include terrorist entities - if it’s going to be explicit on tobacco, it should be explicit on terrorism.

Meanwhile, if PFLP Solidarity Aotearoa believe there is a justified argument for removing the terrorist designation on the PFLP, they should lobby the New Zealand Government with supporting evidence to pursue that objective through the appropriate diplomatic channels. Freedom of speech and freedom of association do not translate to freedom from the rule of law.

As for Kiwibank customers and the relevant oversight bodies, it will remain to be seen how they respond to Kiwibank’s handling of the situation, or not, from here.

As always, stay curious.

Thanks for reading Optimocracy! rights, particularly through mainstream and ‘social’ media, has never been more pronounced. We simultaneously amplify calls for equality while finding ever more ways to group ourselves more diversely.

While the protection and recognition of appropriate rights are undeniably crucial for the freedom and dignity of individuals, this focus has unwittingly overshadowed the equally significant concept of responsibility.

Rights and responsibilities are two sides of the same coin; you cannot have one without the inherent existence of the other. Rights bestow the liberty of choice upon us, while responsibilities guide those choices towards the enrichment of our lives, community, and society.

The New Zealand Perspective

From a New Zealand standpoint, this dialogue assumes a unique cultural dimension when viewed through the lens of 'whanaungatanga,' a Māori concept embodying relationships, kinship, and a sense of collective responsibility. This perspective emphasises that our well-being is deeply interconnected with the well-being of our family (whānau) and community.

In this context, responsibility is not just a personal endeavor but a communal pact to uphold the welfare and harmony of the collective. It's a testament to the idea that our individual purposes are inextricably linked to the larger purpose of our community's and society’s health and vitality.

From a systems-thinking perspective, it speaks to the fact that regardless of where we sit in the political and ideological spectrums, we all exist within a wider set of social systems whether we like or not. The healthier these systems, the better off we all are - and we all have a part to play in that being a reality.

The risk of greater focus on rights over responsibility

There are cultural and societal implications of forgetting our duties. The erosion of focus on responsibility in favor of rights without constraint can lead to further fragmentation in society. We risk further fragmentation when our social or political ideologies conflict in the pursuit of rights and liberty over the ‘common good’, or the ‘common good’ at the expense of the rights and liberty of others.

Jordan Peterson can be a polarising figure, but a point he frequently underscores regarding the significance of bearing one's load as a pathway to meaning dovetails well here. For Peterson, life is inherently fraught with suffering, and it's through voluntarily shouldering the burden of responsibility, be it personal, familial, or communal - that one finds a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. He advocates for a life lived in truth, where acknowledging and embracing our duties forms the cornerstone of character development and societal contribution.
Imagine if we all embraced that sense of individual and shared duty just a little more, and the collective impact that could have?

The Crucible of Purpose

At the heart of this intersection between rights and responsibility we find the concept of purpose. In a world increasingly defined by ‘which side you’re on’, the quest for genuine individual purpose has never been more pertinent. Responsibility, in its myriad forms, offers a path to this sense of purpose.

By taking responsibility for ourselves, we set the foundation for personal growth and resilience. Extending this responsibility to our family strengthens bonds and fosters an environment of support and nurture. Beyond the confines of our immediate relations, assuming responsibility for our community cultivates a sense of belonging and contributes to the creation of a supportive, vibrant societal fabric.

Where to from here?

While the clamor for rights is a testament to our desire for liberty and self-expression, a society that champions rights without the balancing force of responsibility risks fostering a culture of entitlement, division, tension, isolation, and ironically, inequality.

The New Zealand context, our tested and strained but enduring emphasis on community and kinship, serves as a poignant reminder of the strength found in collective responsibility. In whatever form it might take, embracing responsibility is not merely a duty but a privilege that lends depth and meaning to our existence. In the balanced interplay of rights and responsibilities, we can find the blueprint for a society marked by resilience, purpose, and interconnectedness.

It therefore falls to each of us, regardless of our political or ideological leanings, to consider more closely how we each can embrace, champion and value responsibility as means to reinforce the stability and satisfaction found not only in our individual, but collective lives.

As always, stay curious.

Thanks for reading Optimocracy! We should expect effective law and order, and accountability for criminal behaviour - but if we only treat the symptoms, we will never address the root causes of the issue.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The Illusion of Action

Firstly, let's consider the symbolic nature of this measure. Banning gang patches is a gesture that, on the surface, appears to confront the issue head-on. It's a policy that the government can point to as evidence of their action against the scourge of gang-related crime.

However, this is precisely where the problem lies - it is a policy more concerned with the appearance of action than with the substance of real change. The roots of gang membership and activity are complex and multifaceted, intertwined with socio-economic disenfranchisement, systemic failures, and a lack of viable positive enabling opportunities. Addressing these issues requires more than just legislative prohibition; it requires a deep and committed investment in the social fabric of our communities.

The Shadow of Unintended Consequences

The potential for unintended consequences looms large. By pushing gang insignia out of the public eye, we aren’t eradicating these groups, we risk driving them further underground. This could render gangs even more difficult for law enforcement to monitor and combat, effectively exacerbating the problem it seeks to solve. The policy in its narrow focus misses the forest for the trees, neglecting the adaptive nature of criminal organisations and their capacity to evolve in the face of legal obstacles.

A Precarious Balance: Civil Liberties at Stake

Perhaps most concerning, and ironic considering ACT’s positions on civil liberties and freedom of speech, is the encroachment this ban presents to them. The right to freedom of expression, however unpalatable it may be when exercised by gang members (or other groups one may have an issue with), is a cornerstone of our democracy. The question then arises: where do we draw the line? Today it may be gang patches, but tomorrow, what other forms of expression could fall foul of government decree? This slippery slope towards authoritarianism is paved with ostensibly well-meaning policies that, in their execution, chip away at the very liberties they purport to protect.

The Community Conundrum

The relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve is delicate, and predicated in theory, on mutual trust and respect. This ban threatens to undermine that relationship, substituting engagement with antagonism and enforcement. In communities already wary of police presence, increased patrols and focus on gang paraphernalia will likely further entrench feelings of alienation and resentment. Such an adversarial stance does little to foster the community cooperation so essential for effective policing.

The Mirage of Effectiveness

The crux of the matter lies in the ban's fundamental effectiveness - or lack thereof. The challenges of enforcement, from identifying what precisely constitutes a gang patch to the legal battles likely to ensue, present a costly, resource hungry, avoidable logistical nightmare. This should be an anathema to the the coalition’s focus on efficiency and effectiveness.

Further, the absence of concrete evidence supporting the efficacy of such bans in reducing gang activity should give us pause. Are we then merely engaging in an exercise of futility, expending valuable and limited resources and energy on a measure with dubious outcomes? We understand the coalition needs to show action, but this isn’t an optimal strategy.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

While the government's desire to address the issue of gang violence is understood, necessary and shared, the path it has chosen is fraught with pitfalls. This trend involves the reckless and, frankly, intellectually lazy habit of slapping the label 'far-right' or 'alt-right' onto centre-right parties, a mischaracterisation that not only distorts reality but verges on the dangerous.

It's a phenomenon that, were it not so damaging, would be as laughable in its absurdity as calling the Labour Party ‘communist’.
The cavalier branding of New Zealand's centre-right parties as 'far-right' or 'alt-right' is not just a failure of terminology; it's a failure of understanding. It betrays a lack of engagement with the reality behind the meme of issues as portrayed or lobbied in the media and social media, and a dismissal of the potential for constructive political engagement.

I appreciate this note will not resonate nicely with the partisan left, and to an extent, I sympathise. I don’t agree with all the coalitions policy positions, but it’s a coalition - MMP means New Zealanders gets an amalgamation of policy positions (and reality vs ideology), whether its a centre-right or centre-left Government.
I believe the coalition are ‘far wrong’ on some things, but 'far-right' or 'alt-right'? No.

Centre-right parties in New Zealand broadly advocate for economic prudence, individual liberty, and a government that knows its place. However, the fraught discussion around The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi has opened the lid on our underlying need to both reconcile our past and chart our future together as a country. Of course, this means different things to different individuals and groups, creating predictable tensions, debate, lobbying, activism, constructive discussion, and unhelpful ignorance.

Even then, this is a far cry from the shadowy spectres of fascism and racism that the terms 'far-right' and 'alt-right' evoke. These centre-right parties champion equality under the law and the sanctity of free speech, principles that are anathema to the genuine fringes of the right and left wings where intolerance and authoritarianism fester.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" voices with extremists is not just a factual error; it's a strategic blunder. It alienates potential allies by casting them as villains, pushing the political conversation into ever more polarised and unproductive corners. The misuse of these labels blurs the lines between legitimate political discourse and the dangerous ideologies of the real far-right, thereby diminishing the impact and seriousness when confronting genuine extremism.

Moreover, this habit of mislabeling is not just an academic concern—it has real-world implications. It poisons the well of public discourse, making it all but impossible for meaningful dialogue and compromise. In a world desperately in need of nuanced thought and cooperation, this reckless branding serves only to deepen divides, entrench stereotypes, and hinder the progress towards a more cohesive society.

Consider some of the key differences between genuine far-right political parties and New Zealand's centre-right parties:

Ideological Foundations:

Far-right parties often ground their ideology in extreme nationalism, xenophobia, and the rejection of democratic principles, sometimes veering into authoritarianism or fascism.

Centre-right parties in New Zealand typically advocate for conservative and liberal democratic values, emphasising economic freedom, individual responsibility, and limited government intervention, within a democratic framework. Indeed they have staked some of there strategy on attracting foreign investment via home ownership and business.

Economic Policies:

Far-right parties may support protectionist economic policies, opposing globalisation and free trade based on nationalist sentiments.

Centre-right parties generally champion free-market capitalism, globalisation, free trade, and fiscal conservatism, aiming for economic growth and prosperity.

Immigration Policies:

Far-right parties often adopt hardline stances on immigration, advocating for strict immigration controls or policies that prioritise certain ethnic or cultural groups, and may promote social policies that are exclusionary or discriminatory.

Centre-right parties focus on more moderate social policies, supporting controlled immigration that benefits the economy, and championing social cohesion while respecting multiculturalism.

Approach to Democracy and Pluralism:

Far-right parties may exhibit skepticism or outright hostility towards democratic norms, pluralism, and the protection of minority rights, sometimes undermining the rule of law and freedom of the press.

Centre-right parties uphold the principles of democracy, the rule of law, the importance of civil liberties, and the protection of rights for all citizens, including minorities.

International Relations:

Far-right parties can be isolationist, skeptical of international institutions and agreements, and often espouse a unilateral approach to foreign policy based on national interest.

Centre-right parties are generally more open to international cooperation, supporting alliances, and participation in international institutions, while also promoting national interests.

What's needed now, more than ever, is a return to a discourse that values precision in language, respects differing viewpoints, and looks for solutions and pragmatism over slogans, memes and partisanship. The challenges facing our society are too significant to be left to the mercy of those who would rather score cheap political points than engage in honest debate.

For the sake of New Zealand's future, it's a trend that must be reversed. Only through clear-eyed analysis and respectful discourse can we hope to navigate the current and future complexities of modern governance and society.

As always, stay curious.

Thanks for reading Optimocracy!
